You fight computers and receipts

27th January 2014

My technology family has gained a new member. I call him Thunderfingers.

It’s a desktop. I’d tell you more if I knew more. It’s got a Quad-core process or something like that. I like using computers but ask me how one works and I’m clueless! Fortunately I’ve got Tyrone to guide me in the right direction and to make sure I don’t buy a load of crap just because it’s pretty.

The original plan was for Tyrone to build me a computer. I had quite a small budget and we struggled to get a better deal that the one we got in the end. I bought the tower from PC World [2. It came with a wireless keyboard and mouse too but they’re aren’t veryย ergonomic so I’ll probably sell them.] and the monitor from Argos. I ended up getting a 24 inch monitor and it is massive. It didn’t look that big in the shop! It’s taking me some time to get use to it but already I’m starting to see the practical side of it. The only problem with it is that it’s running on Windows 8. Ugh!

I’ll admit, the name is a little odd. He’s named after the late bass guitarist of the The Who, John Entwistle, who was given the nickname because of his magical finger skills when playing bass. [1. If you’d like to see just how good he was I recommend this video.] I initially wanted to name my Apple devices after Who related things but I doubt I will ever get a Mac and I didn’t want John being left out of the club ;).

I know my last blog post was full of doom and gloom but I’m feeling happier now. I know my hip problem is something that I’ve just got to get on with, but I can do a few things to make it a little easier for myself. I’ve got back in to doing yoga. I’ve tailored my sessions to make sure I am working on my hip and leg muscles. I’ve also added in a few strenuous moves which make me ache but must be working. And, as an added bonus, yoga helps me to relax after a stressful day.

I’ve also been job hunting. I’m not desperate for a job but it would be nice to earn a little extra money over the summer. And there is no way I’m falling into the trap I fell into last year when I said I could do as many hours as possible, and I ended up working full-time. I just want about 8 hours a week. Just something flexible. There aren’t many jobs around at the moment but I’m hoping when all the students go home from summer I can sweep in and take their jobs.

I’m planning on making a new layout for this site considering it’s been up for so long, and also because it looks rubbish on a 24 inch monitor! Bare with me. It will take some time!

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. Congrats! I have a 28-in TV as my monitor and I dont think I will ever go with a smaller monitor. It was crazy at first but I love it. (:

Can’t wait to see the new layout!

    • Now I’m use to monitor it feels about the right size. It was just such a change from my tiny laptop screen. ๐Ÿ™‚

You might be waiting sometime haha!

Ahhh I love getting new technology. I like getting new video games and phones and we recently got two new TVs. ๐Ÿ˜€ I end up messing with them and playing with them all day. I love learning how they work lol.

But yes I feel your pain on Windows 8. ugh. It is truly awful.

    • When I first got my computer I couldn’t leave it alone. I’d turn it off to go and do some work and just come back and turn it on again.

I’ve done everything I can to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7 including installing a proper start menu!

Yay for getting a new computer! I’ve been hesitant on moving up to Windows 8 ๐Ÿ™ I’m building a new computer right now, and I think I’m just going to move my Windows 7 install over from my current computer. 24″ is a nice size for a monitor though! I think I’m using that at work and two 23″s at home. It is kind of weird at first, but I feel like you can get used to it quickly ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m glad you’re feeling happier too! I hope the yoga helps out. It’s nice to have something to relax. Good luck on your job hunt!

    • Windows 8 is quicker but it’s just over complicated for no good reason. I downloaded something called Classic Shell so that I have a normal, Windows 7 style start menu.

I’ve been procrastinating on getting a new computer for awhile. I’ve been torn between buying a brand new laptop and building a desktop. I don’t think I could give names to my technologies because I’d probably grow more attached to them than I already am! (Heh, like that’s possible. :P)

Being a student myself, I can understand how difficult it is to find a job. I went through that stage and I am now kicking myself in the head for over working and running myself to the ground. Relaxation is definitely something that I miss. I really want to try yoga, but I’m too shy to go by myself. It’s great to hear that you’re benefiting a lot from yoga. I hope you’re able to continue once you find a job!

    • Get a desktop! They are so much easier to fix when something goes wrong. I know laptops are more practical for on the move but I never use to take mine out the house haha! I’ve now got an iPad for trips out.

Yeah, I really am thinking about waiting until the summer to get a job. I don’t want to ruin my degree just because I want more money (especially when I don’t really need it right now).

I do yoga at home. It’s free (haha) and you don’t have to worry about what other people think. I started with a game for my Wii but now I use an app on my iPad to teach me the poses and set up routines for me.

Aw I haven’t read your last post, but I hope that what happened to your hip is something that you can get through!

Besides that, it’s awesome that you got a new computer ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m definitely one of those people that would end up just getting something because it looked nice lmao. Like one of my past ambitions was to save up for an iMac just so I could have the fancy large screen haha.

Can’t wait for the new layout as well! I’ll assume you code just about everything, but I have to ask, how did you manage your commenting format? I’ve been trying to figure it out for days and I could never do it! All I wanted was my replies to follow right after the comment it’s replying to, and now that I have that my comment formatting got all messed up. ๐Ÿ™

    • It’s been so long since I set up the comment reply system that I can’t remember! But I’ve looked at my code and it seems like I’ve got a bit of code in the function.php file of WordPress. I’d be more than happy to send you the code in an email or something. ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha, I love how you named your computer after a bass guitarist. But congratulations on getting a new one. I should probably get myself one to, before I start studying because then I probably won’t be able to afford one…

Ah, I really want to try out yoga. Do you go to calsses or just do it at home by yourself? It’s good that it is helping with your hip and stress ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I do yoga at home because it’s free and because I don’t have to be seen making a fool of myself in public. But mainly I do it at home because I can’t afford it. I live right next to a yoga place and it’s like ยฃ30 a month membership. That’s more expensive than most gyms in the city.
