The Weekend Blog | A big new year catch up!

13th January 2019

I know I’m late to the party but happy 2019! One of my goals for this year was to get back into posting more regularly here on Empfire, but I’m off to the best of starts, am I!

I had a cold all over Christmas and New Year, and just as I thought I was on the road to recovery, I came down with a stomach bug (maybe even the flu) this week. It really knocked me about and I ended up giving myself my first sick day since becoming self-employed.

Anyway, I’m finally feeling more human again, and I’m not going to let this rocky start to the new year knock me off track.

Today I wanted to have a big old catch up because I feel like a lot has happened since we last spoke…

Christmas and New Year

As I’ve just mentioned, I started with a cold on Christmas Eve and I felt terrible all over the Christmas break. But I tried not to let it get to me too much and I was able to enjoy a lovely Christmas at home with the family.

In-between the cold flu drinks, I was able to enjoy a lot of alcohol (although I don’t really endorse mixing the two) and food. That’s what Christmas is all about!

We had a quiet night in on New Year’s Eve and we went to bed soon after midnight. I have to say, I think New Year is so overrated.

We’re off to Barcelona!

After our first day back at work after the Christmas break, Tyrone and I decided we needed another break and so we booked a little trip to Barcelona next month!

We’re specifically going to watch the Formula 1 pre-season testing (Tyrone’s idea) but I’m sure we will find some time to do some sightseeing and drink some sangria.

I’ve been to Barcelona twice before but I’ve never actually stayed in the city, and it will Tyrone’s first time. I can’t wait to show him around.

I’m quite anxious about the trip because it’s our first time going on a holiday that isn’t a package holiday. I like knowing that someone else is responsible for getting us to and from the hotel! But I’m sure it will be an adventure and hopefully, it will give me the confidence to do more city breaks like this.

My blood test results came back clear

If you read my Weekend Blog post that I published before Christmas then you may recall that I had to have a blood test because my doctor suspected that I might have rheumatoid arthritis.

Anyway, the test results came back clear so I don’t have arthritis, which of course is great news. However, I still don’t know why my fingers were swollen for over a month.

Over the Christmas break the swelling went down massively and I’m able to bend my fingers again. They’re still looking a little puffy, so I’m keeping an eye on them, but hopefully, it was just a one-off.

I turned 25

A week ago today was my 25th birthday. I was really spoilt by my family and friends and I’m so grateful for all the gifts I received.

Tyrone bought me a couple of games for my Nintendo Switch including Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu, so I spent most of the day playing on that.

In the evening we went into Liverpool for a meal at one of my favourite restaurants; Mowgli. They server Indian street food and it’s completely different from any Indian food I’ve eaten before. I’ve eaten there a few times before with my friends but Tyrone had never been before. He loved it and if you are a vegetarian I think you would too.

I’m a finalist in the UK Blog Awards!

Before this week started to go downhill, I found out on Monday that my blog over at had made it through to the finals of the UK Blog Awards in the Digital and Technology category!

I was genuinely shocked. My blog hasn’t even been up and running a year so to make it to the finals is incredible. I’ve said before but I am so proud of my blog and I’ve poured a lot of time and effort into it.

Unlike previous years, they aren’t having a proper awards ceremony, and I have to say I’m glad because going to London from Liverpool is very expensive and obviously we’ve just spent a load of money on our trip to Barcelona. It’s all going to be streamed online.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank those who voted for me. I really do appreciate it.

I had a massive wardrobe clear out

Hands up if you’ve watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. 🙋‍♀️ I have, and I’m obsessed.

I read her book a few years ago and I learned a lot from it, but I never really tried out her method. However, watching the show on Netflix and seeing other people tidying up really got me in the mood for a good sort out.

So yesterday I took absolutely everything out of my wardrobe and dumped in on my bed. Like most people in the show, I was genuinely shocked about how many clothes I owned.

I thought it would take me about an hour to sort through all of my clothes, but in the end, it took the whole afternoon. I feel like it was really successful though as I ended up with 5 bags of clothes to be donated to charity (if they’re in good condition) and H&M (who will take clothes in any condition and give you a voucher in return).

I also tried out her folding technique so all of my skirts are folded into cute little parcels. I just wonder how long they will stay like that for!

I’ve created a morning routine

Up until this year, my morning routine consisted of getting up as late as possible, rolling out of bed to make myself a cup of tea, and then heading back upstairs to my office to do some work. Can you even call that a routine?!

So, this year I’ve decided that I want to develop a morning routine that makes me feel good and that actually makes me want to get of bed in the morning.

My new routine consists of me getting up earlier, making a cup of tea and sitting on my sofa to fill in my gratitude journal while I really enjoy my first brew of the day. Then I spend some time reading as I’ve set myself a goal of reading 25 books this year.

Honestly, I feel like a new woman, and I’ve found that it has made a massive difference to how I feel when the time comes to actually start doing some work.

I’m hoping I can keep this up for the rest of the year because who knows, I might actually become a morning person!

Phew! That was a lot to catch up on!

I hope you’ve had a great start to 2019. Let me know in the comments how the first couple of weeks of the year have been for you…

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. Happy New Year!
Have you tried a wake up light? I’ve bought one and it is amazing. These days I’m in London and I didn’t take it with me, obviously, and I feel less refreshed in the morning. I was so tired this morning and I couldn’t get up, while at home I do more things and still get up before the alarm goes off, only by seeing the lights gradually turning up. I’ve made a review for it on my blog, if you want to read that. That should help you with your morning routine. Getting up earlier without the dread of the alarm.
I’m looking forward to see your pictures from the holiday in Barcelona.

  2. Cat

That sucks about being sick over Christmas break! I hope you’re feeling better! That’s exciting that you’re going to Barcelona though. I’ve never been, and it looks like such a lovely city. I’m a big fan of trips that aren’t package ones because of the flexibility we have. I hope you have a good time!

I’m so glad your blood test came back clear, and congrats on the UK Blog Awards! Happy (belated) birthday too! So many happy things together!

Oh man, that new Marie Kondo show really motivated me too. I also did the clothes pile and was surprised at how much I had. I plan on blogging about it soon. I heard about her method before, but never really wanted to try it. Her show made me change my mind! I’m dealing with books and papers now.

A morning routine sounds like a good way to start the day 🙂 I didn’t really have one before, but now I feel like I need one to be able to get to work on time, haha. Having a baby really changes things around!

  3. Ah, Tyrone is gonna love Barcelona. I’m definitely overdue a visit – I love that city! I’m glad to hear that your blood tests results were positive! And also, happy belated birthday – sounds like you had a great time 😀 Congratulations on making it to the finals – that is an amazing achievement! I definitely need to watch Tidying Up with Marie Kondo – I feel like everyone has watched it except me, haha. Could really do with some tips. I’ve introduced a new routine in the morning as well, and it’s helped massively with getting things moving in the morning!

  4. Joy

Woah! The new year is off to an amazing start for you. Barcelona sounds so awesome. I hope you and Tyrone enjoy yourself and that the weather is pleasant.

I love the idea of a morning routine! I first instinct is to hit the ground running in the morning at 6AM. By the time it’s 3PM, I’m usually burnt out and have no energy to do anything, lol.

  5. The end of the year was incredibly stressful for me, and thus I was also late to the 2019 blogging party. I NEED to start getting myself up earlier and getting a good routine going so that I can prioritize my day better. My new medicine is making me so sleepy all the time though oh my gosh -.-
I’m glad to be back to the blogging scene, and bought Marie Kondo’s book on kindle because you all keep talking about how much it’s helping you. And I SEVERELY need to declutter my house so I hope it helps me as well!
