Watercolour paints

This week I picked up an old hobby of mine – painting.

Actually, make that two old hobbies of mine – painting and yoga.

When I was younger I loved art. I was even awarded the creative arts award before leaving primary school. I stopped when I started secondary school. I didn’t enjoy art at school because I found the teachers too critical. I didn’t take art for GCSE but I did take graphics to at least keep some creativity in my life.

Science has dominated my life for the past 5 years and I’m pretty sick of it. I use to love being creative and I regret leaving it all behind.

So, this week I pulled out my watercolours from storage, picked up a paint brush and started working on a painting of Venice. It’s not finished yet and it looks pretty awful, but I am determined to finish it, then start another one and finish that. I use to be great at art and I believe I still have it in me. I’m just out of practice.

Plus, when there is no pressure like there is in school art classes, painting can be so incredibly relaxing.

I’ve also started to do some yoga again. Just a few beginner moved to ease myself in. It’s been over a year since I stopped thanks to my deteriorating hip condition, but I’m getting stronger again (thank you very much steroids).

Both painting and yoga have helped me to de-stress, which has been beneficial given that I sat my first exam of my final year on Thursday.

It went well. I didn’t over work myself or let stress get the better of me, and I still went into the exam with more than enough references in my head to get me through the essays.

My next exam is on Tuesday and it’s the one I am dreading the most. But I shall keep up with the yoga and the painting, and hope it keeps me sane.

Have a great weekend!

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. It’s great you’ve started yoga again x

  2. Will you show us any of your paintings? I’d love to see them! I think anyone who can use watercolours is a genius! It must be very therapeutic too, I’m glad it’s de-stressing you – same with the yoga! I’m glad your hip is getting better thanks to the steroids. Good luck with your last exam too – I’m sure you’ll nail it!

Some day, when I get a bit better! I’m hoping to design my next blog layout header using watercolour.

      Thank you. πŸ™‚

  3. Those are great hobbies to get into to de-stress. I’ve been knitting lately as my way to de-stress πŸ™‚ Just wished it didn’t hurt my hand so much!

I’ve tried yoga once. Nope. Not for me. I’ll stick to walking and doing light exercises!

Good luck with your exam on Tuesday!

I learnt to knit years ago but I can’t remember how to do it. πŸ™ I enjoy sewing though, unless it’s with my machine. I still need to get to grips with that!

  4. Keep going! You can do it πŸ™‚
I miss creativity too, 9 years in science has been pretty draining. It’s why I started blogging and why I started picking up my DSLR again. I love photography and taking time to go for a walk and taking a few shots helps clear my mind πŸ™‚
    Good luck for Tuesday x

Thank you! Photography is great for fulfilling my creativity needs. I can’t wait to get out more with my camera in the summer.

I loved art when I was younger too! Well, I still do, but I have a hard time making time for it because I find myself doing other things. I’ve been wanting to pick up oil paints and watercolors again. Painting and yoga sound like great ways to de-stress though πŸ™‚

I hope the exam went well!
