A review of 2017

23rd December 2017

It’s that time of year again; it’s time for my yearly review post!

2017 hasn’t been the best of years for me, and I’ll be glad the back of it. But today I want to look past the negatives and focus on the positive things that have happened this year.

So let’s take a walk down memory lane and reminisce about what’s happened over the last 12 months…

January

  • I celebrated my 23rd birthday. We played crazy golf and ate lots of Mexican food. It was the best birthday I’ve had in a long time. πŸŽ‚
  • My medical negligence legal case came to an end after 4 and a half years. I got the outcome I wanted, and I’m just glad it’s all over. βš–οΈ
  • I gave Empfire a makeover and finally made it responsive AND mobile friendly. πŸ‘©β€πŸ’»
  • I started going swimming again for the first in years. I now try to go weekly and it’s by far one of the best decisions I’ve made in 2017. I love it! πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

February

  • I went to see Sunny Afternoon (a musical about The Kinks) with my friend Becky. πŸ₯
  • I drove into Wales for the first time and I didn’t get a speeding ticket (if you’ve ever been to Wales you’ll know this is an achievement!!)Β πŸš—πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ·σ ¬σ ³σ Ώ

March

  • I celebrated 6 years of Empfire, and I ran a little giveaway to celebrate. πŸŽ‰
  • I got new retainer braces made to replace my old ones. This is such a boring thing to spend money on, but a necessity and something I’d been meaning to get sorted for years. 😁

April

  • I taught myself to knit and started knitting myself a scarf. I thought I’d finish it in time for winter, but nope! πŸ‘šβœ‚οΈ
  • I ditched my blogging schedule and it took a way a lot of the stress of blogging. πŸ—“οΈ

May

  • I found myself an amazing hairdresser and I no longer find going to the hairdressers such an anxious experience. πŸ’‡
  • We went to see Brian Cox live. βœ¨πŸ”
  • I went on a first aid course for work so now I’m a qualified first aider until 2020. πŸš‘
  • Tyrone got a 1st in his degree and started working as a web developer. πŸŽ“πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

June

July

  • Tyrone and I played photographers at his uncle’s wedding. I’m not sure I’m cut out for wedding photography but I enjoyed the experience. πŸ’’πŸ“Έ
  • We moved into our house. We had a bit of a nightmare when our removals guy didn’t turn up on time (two hours late!) but we made it in the end. 🏑
  • I met up with Pauline and Amy (in real life!) and we spent a day in Manchester together. πŸ‘―

August

  • Tyrone and I went to New York for our summer holiday. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ—½πŸš• We managed to cram so much in while we were there and I just felt happy the whole time we were there. Even when I was in pain from walking so much! Here are a few of the highlights from the trip:
    • We went to the top of One World Trade Center
    • And to the top of the Empire State building
    • We explored Central Park
    • We visit the Museum of Sex
    • We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and had lunch at Grimaldi’s Pizza
    • We walked the High Line to the Chelsea Market

September

  • I started having cognitive behavioral therapy for my anxiety after 9 months (!!!) of waiting for an appointment. And while I do think it helped somewhat, I still think there’s a long way to go in terms of learning to manage my mental health.

October

  • We went to see comedian Milton Jones at the Echo.
  • Tyrone and I celebrated our 8th anniversary together. We went on a little road trip in North Wales. πŸ’‘

November

  • I managed to get tickets to see Electric Light Orchestra next October, and I also got tickets for my parents for Christmas! I did get tickets to see Peter Kay in 2019 (amazing seats too by the way) but he’s had to cancel his tour, so that was heartbreaking. πŸ’”

December

  • I went to see Kasabian with my friend Rebecca. It was my second time seeing them live and, as always, they were incredible! 🎸
  • I made a HUGE decision that feels kind of crazy right now. I’ll explain more in early 2018! πŸŽ‰
  • I started having counseling to help with my anxiety and depression.
  • This one has not happened yet…but I will be spending Christmas at home in Shropshire and I can’t wait to spent some time with my family and friends! πŸŽ„

Okay, so there’s definitely more positive things in this list than I thought there would be!

This year I’ve decided not to write a blog post about Empfire in 2017 because, quite frankly, I’ve been pants at blogging this year. But now, with 2018 just around the corner, I feel in a good place and I’m ready to get back into blogging more frequently again. So watch this space!

I hope you all had an amazing year! What have been your highlights of 2017?

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. Focus on the positives as much as you can, there are plenty of wonderful things on this list, including a house! πŸ™‚ Merry Christmas! xx

  2. merry christmas, holly!

finding the right hair stylist is definitely a pain! i have my go-to hair stylist but he’s still not my fave. it’s more of a “i don’t have choices so…” thing.

my 2017 pretty much sucks but what’s new. i honestly don’t have any expectation for 2018. it’s also upsetting that the last few moments of 2017 (read: december) pretty much sucks for me. i mean, before the year end, i wanted the last few moments to at least be decent but nope. so many personal and family struggles. anyway, glad your 2017 worked out though. judging from your recap, every month was filled with something new and perhaps productive(?) and that’s nice to know πŸ™‚

    • Holly

      Merry Christmas Elise!

I kind of found my hairdresser accidentally. I made an appointment to have my haircut by a different stylist at the salon but she made a complete mess of my hair. So another hairdressers had to fix it and I’ve just stuck with him ever since.

  3. 2017 seems to have many ups and downs in your life, Holly. I definitely would say you have some major highlights like winning that legal case. I remember talking to you about that one over Twitter. So is buying a house. That’s huge. Though it was stressful, you now have your own place!
Ooh that decision you recently have made seems interestingly mysterious! I’m looking forward to knowing more about it in the coming year!

Merry Christmas, Holly and wish you a very Happy New Year! May 2018 be even more better and filled with lots of joys!

  4. Cat

Sorry to hear that 2017 wasn’t that great of a year, but you had a lot of good memories at least! I’m especially happy for you on the medical negligence legal case. That must have been stressful for those 4.5 years, and I’m so glad it turned out the way you wanted it to. Also yay to getting a house, visiting NY, and meeting Pauline and Amy! What an eventful year!

I’m curious about that huge decision you mentioned! I’m looking forward to hearing more about it. I hope you had a good Christmas at home, and I hope that 2018 will be a better year for you!

  5. Joy

I’m sorry that this year hasn’t been the best but you have seen so much this past year that amazes me. I’m glad that you were able to point out and have so many bright spots because those moments are precious and should be treasured, no matter how small.

Congrats on all of your big accomplishments this year! Buying a house, visiting a favorite city, taking steps to self-care, meeting longtime friends in person. I know that I am just a spectator but I am very proud of being able witness the growth and change in the life of someone who deserves it.

I can’t wait to see what the new year has in store for you, Holly!

    • Holly

Aww Joy, this is such a sweet comment! 😊 Thank you! I do feel like I’ve grown and learned so much this year.

  6. What a fantastic year! πŸ™‚

Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018!

  7. I know that 2017 wasn’t the best year for you, but I am SO proud of you for battling through those rougher days. I’m so glad that we got to meet this year, I really enjoyed myself and am excited for the next time we can meet again so that I can give you a big hug!!

I loved re-living my New York moments on Instagram with you – thanks for rocking! πŸ˜‰

I wish you the best 2018. You’re incredible, amazing and super talented! I can’t wait to see the next chapter 😊

    • Holly

Thank you, Pauline! 😊 I’m so grateful for all the incredible support you have given me this year.

We will definitely have to meet up again in 2018!

  8. Amy

Sorry that this year hasn’t been so great, Holly, Hopefully 2018 will be better, and you’ll be much happier.

It’s great to see all the positive things that have happened this year though. I can’t believe you managed buying a house and going to New York in one year! That must have been so stressful to sort out. I’m glad you’re settling into your new home though and I’ve loved seeing your Insta stories about it. Hope you get it all finished in 2018.

New York sounds absolutely amazing and I’ve loved reading your posts about it. I definitely want to visit at some point – even if it’s just to get pizza!

I’m ditching the blogging schedule in 2018. I tried really hard to plan content last year and it just ended up making me feel pressured and stressed. I’d rather just post when I want and enjoy it. Plus, it’ll be nice to have more free time!

I’m so glad we got a chance to meet in 2017. We definitely need to meet up again!

    • Holly

Thank you, Amy! I have high hopes for 2018 being a better year for me!

Haha organising New York was a piece of cake compared to buying a house. We did it so that we’d have something to focus on while we were waiting to hear about the house.

I definitely feel more relaxed about blogging since ditching the schedule. It’s nice to know that if I need a break then my readers will stick around regardless.

Yes! We totally need to meet up again this year!
