The Weekend Blog | The heating is on!

We finally decided to bite the bullet and put the central heating on this week, which means it’s officially winter as far as I’m concerned.

And, as expected, my mental health hasn’t been great this week. I think it’s partially because of the cold, dark days but also because I’ve been quite stressed at work with an approaching deadline, but you know what, I’m doing okay.

I’ve made lots of time for myself this week. I’ve been sneaking off to my “office” (spare bedroom!) in an evening to work on the new theme I’m building for Empfire. I’m planning on having it ready for a New Year launch, which may seem like a long time off but I’ve got a lot of work to do updating old posts before it can go live. But I am so excited to share it with you.

I think it’s slightly crazy that I spend all day coding at work, then I come home and continue to code in the evening, but I guess that just demonstrates how much I love what I do.

I also made time for a bit of retail therapy this week and managed to pick myself up not one but two pairs of ankle boots. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but I always have a nightmare each winter finding ankle boots that are…

  1. Light enough that they don’t cause my hip any pain.
  2. Durable enough to survive the winter and my uneven weight distribution when I walk.
  3. Comfortable enough to get me to work everyday without rubbing me.
  4. Stylish enough that I don’t look like I’m wearing safety shoes.

Well, this year, in the space of 4 days I’ve found two pairs of boots that may fit the criteria (I guess you can’t tell how durable they will be) so I’m chuffed. My mum suggested buying lots of pairs of boots so I can alternate between them and maybe they’ll last me for the entire winter. Both of the pairs of boots I bought were super cheap (one pair was even from Tesco!) so if things don’t work out at least I haven’t lost too much money.

Unlike the £60 pair I once owned that destroyed my hip because of the weight…

Anyway, enough about shoes.

So far this weekend has been really relaxed. Yesterday we had friends over for a games night and a Chinese takeaway, which was lovely. Staying in on an evening with friends is the best way to survive the winter. It’s also very hygge.

This morning I got up early and did another trial run of driving to work; all by myself this time. It could not have gone better! I didn’t make any mistakes! I’m so happy as it means I now feel confident enough to start driving to work when I want to. And being able to drive to work will make such a difference to my life.

Now I have the rest of the day to chill out, do some baking, have a relaxing bath and play some Sims.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

P.S. I made the fudge in the photo, and used a recipe from by best friend’s blog; Winberry Crumble.

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. I am so close to putting the heat on but our heating bills are beyond ridiculous in the winter so I’m trying to hold out. Can you say house coats and wool socks? LOL

I can’t wait to see your new theme! Your themes are always to crisp and organized. I don’t think it’s crazy at all that you enjoy coding so much that you do it even on your free time. That just shows passion! And hooray for finding new boots!

Oh, and that fudge looks AH-mazing!

I’m dreading the winter heating bill, as always! It was getting to the stage where we were cold with several layers on so we had to give in.

Why thank you! I think the next one is going to be even crisper!

  2. I gave in to the heating when I was off work! I need to get some new boots too, I have a shopping trip planned for pay day :) Can’t wait to see your new theme x

I think Tyrone was dying to put the heating on because he’s at home most of the time now he’s back at uni!

  3. The apartment building I live in put the heat on last weekend, the weather is still up and down here. Today/tonight it’s in the thirties but next week we are supposed to be in the sixties and one day even in the seventies. I live in a studio apartment so it gets very hot in here, I’ve been sleeping with my window cracked and the heat off.

When we lived in a flat we found it got very warm. There was one winter where we didn’t put the heating on at all!

  4. You really love your job :) It’s fab, you have to spend a big part of your life working, so enjoying it makes life amazing. Congratulations for the boots, there are good products in supermarket, even though a couple of years ago I wouldn’t even look at them, now I buy from time to time as I like the quality. x

  5. Hope you had a better week this week! I don’t like adjusting to the cold at the beginning, but I used to it after a while XD. It’s pretty awesome that you continue developing yourself. I agree with your mom, it’s better to alternate between boots (or shoes) so they’d last longer :). That’s how I roll XD.

    Have a great weekend!

  6. I hate cold days, but luckily we don’t really have cold days till mid January or February, and it’s currently very hot here!
I hate buy boots or shoes, because I always end up with something I don’t like for the long run, so I like to have a few options to choose from and so I buy at least 2 pairs at a time!
The fudge is very delicious looking, what are those stars on top of it though?

I’m looking forward to when it’ll be cold enough for us to turn on the heating. It’s still warm here, and our AC is still running. I want it to cool down!

Sorry to hear that you’ve been stressed lately, and good luck on your deadline! That’s good that you’ve been able to make time for yourself. I do the same thing where I code at work, and then I code some more at home. I think it’s kind of therapeutic though, because at work, you’re coding for someone else. It’s nice when the coding is for yourself :) Can’t wait to see the new theme later!

Yay for finding boots that you like! I’m glad your trial run of driving to work went well too!

  8. I’m really tight with money, so I’ll only put the heating on for about 10 minutes a day. I always regret not timing it so when I get in from work at 11pm / midnight the house is warm….
Glad to hear you’ve found suitable shoes! Fingers crossed they’re durable enough for you. Made up to hear about your driving though – how exciting!
Sorry to hear your mental health hasn’t been so good, but hopefully hygge lifestyle will help combat the down feeling winter always brings!

  9. Amy

The heating’s on in our house as well – it’s getting so cold! Can’t stand my morning wait at the bus stop anymore because the weather is awful. Definitely need to get my winter clothes on now!

Sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling great recently. Hopefully your blogging break will do you good. We all need time to ourselves to relax, and blogging can take over sometimes. Hope you feel better soon!

Good luck with the new layout as well. I’m in the process of sorting out mine, it just might take a while with the limited free time I have. Totally understandable that it won’t be unveiled ’til January!

Glad to hear you found some shoes!

  10. I am so excited for the new theme, I have seen some of your tweets about it 😄😄 Some of my old posts needed updating every time I made a new theme but I really didn’t bother with some of the ones that were more than two years old… LOL.

It’s really nice that you’ve made your spare room an office. I know when I move out, we are going to try and have a ‘study’ if we can get a place with two bedrooms. 😆

The fudge looks so good! I was originally going to ask if you made them before I read that you did.

Congrats on driving to work smoothly! Driving by yourself only gets easier. The first test-run I did after my test was terrifying.

I’ve never heard of ankle boots being so heavy they hurt the hips, but it sounds painful. I wear quite stompy shoes all the time so maybe I’m just immune to it now, haha. Sadly ankle boots look dreadful on me – I have short, stocky legs and they just make them look even shorter and stockier. :(

I’m glad your week was okay despite the stress! And the cold. I think the dark is the real killer for me. It’s so depressing to see it’s dark outside at 5pm.
