My 21st Birthday

13th January 2015

John Lewis Mini sewing machine

I wrote a summary of my 21st birthday in last week’s Weekend Blog post (which you can read here) but today I thought I’d talk a bit about what I got for my birthday.

I know not everyone likes these posts but I only write two of these posts a year – for my birthday and Christmas. I’m not one of these people who does ‘haul’ posts because I rarely go shopping unless it’s for food. Plus the word ‘haul’ is associated with stealing, and I’ve just never understood why people refer to their posts as ‘hauls’. Maybe that’s just me.

Armani Code

My parents bought me a sewing machine for my 21st. I picked out this mini one from John Lewis as I wanted something quite basic as it’s been years since I last used one. They also gave me some of my favourite perfume: Armani Code.

Tyrone's gifts

Tyrone, who clearly knows me very well, bought me lots of little things including Plants Vs Zombies plushies, the original Casino Royal on Blu-ray, a film cell from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Trilogy scripts and some Ted Baker goodies.

Also, I should point out that the camera lens is not a real lens. It’s a thermos mug! How fun!

Most of my family sent me money which I am very grateful for as my parents and I are planning on going to New York for a few days at Easter to have a real celebration. It will be our first time in America so I’m so excited already. Just need to get it booked now.

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. Great presents! The Plants Vs Zombies plushies are so cute, I love them (brains… :D ). The lens mug is very funny too.

  2. Cat

I actually like haul posts! I often see new things that I didn’t know about before, and it’s fun to see what people get. I also don’t think people should feel bad for sharing things they get that make them happy :)

Those are great gifts! Tyrone picked out good movies, and those plushies are so cute. I’ve also been wanting one of those camera lens mugs! Can’t wait to see what you make with the sewing machine. Those are such handy things to have :D

That’s awesome that you’re going to NY later! I used to live there and still visit once in a while.

The camera lens mug is such fun. This one looks so much like a Canon lens that when I opened it I thought it was one…just a lot lighter haha!

Oh wow! I had no idea that you use to live there. You’ll have to tell me all the best places to visit. ;)

  3. I hope you get to go to NY! I can’t wait to go there eventually. Looks like you got a lot of lovely presents, and that is so generous of Tyrone, too!

I remember waiting on a mug designed like a camera lens, for the longest time. Glad I finally got one a couple of years ago thanks to my dad. XD

The sewing machine looks super gorgeous. I LOVE the colour.

Thank you. :) I’m looking to book for New York at the end of the month. It will be something nice to look forward right in the middle of my exam revision period.

The sewing machine came in lots of different colours but the blue was so cute!

  4. NY is amazing, it’s such a strange and surprising place, I hope you manage to go!
I love posts like this, but I agree with the word ‘haul’. It’s got negative connotations, I don’t understand why it’s used so often! But I do really enjoy seeing what people have got for Christmas, or for a birthday or even just in general! It’s a great way to learn about other people, and you might see something you like also. The sewing machine is lovely, I hope you get great use out of it! The film cell is cool, I have a Harry Potter one and I think they’re great things to own, very unique.

The more I hear and read about New York, the more I want to go!

I’ve only used my sewing machine for a practice run so far, but I hope to get some material and make something useful soon.

I was about to say happy birthday and then realized how stupid I was. dang it this brain *knocks head like a walnut*

I think the word ‘haul’ is so overrated that the first impression of a post with HAUL in it kind of..bores me. but of course I’m in no position of telling bloggers how to write their title. there is only one blogger who doesn’t use the word haul but instead use ‘acquisitions’ instead. I think it sounds better, plus no one really come up with something other than HAULS in their post.

oh my god, the dark knight trilogy. AND THE SCRIPTS!! I’m screaming over here!! I’m a fan of DC and i LOOOOOOVE batman and the bat family a-and the dark knight trilogy omg waaahhhh… some people said the dark knight is meh because nolan made it too dark but i love the movies because of that. the taste of nolan in movies = superb :P

ah the camera lens mug was so popular here! everyone bought it. i didn’t want it when my mom offered me one LOL i was like “but everyone’s using it! i don’t wanna be their clone!” haha still, i think it’s adorable ;)

‘Acquisitions’ is definitely less negative than ‘haul’. I like it!

The Dark Knight is my favourite film ever! I’ve probably watched it 100 times. Anyone who does like The Dark Knight has me to answer to! Haha, seriously, they must have no taste!

The scripts are pretty fun to read because if you’ve seen the films as many times as I have you can pick up on the differences.

  6. What lovely presents :) That thermos mug is awesome!

  7. Elena

Happy Belated Birthday! The plushies are so cute, and I hope you get good use out of the sewing machine. I also hope you get a nice celebration with you parents in New York, I bet it is going to be amazing :-D

  8. Agent Q

What a great bunch of presents! It’s nice to see people showing readers their collection of items once in awhile, just so long as s/he doesn’t post weekly “hauls.” Those are overdone and get old pretty quickly. You, on the other hand, are fine, so don’t worry about it. :) That being the case, These are pretty cute gifts you got. Love the Plants v. Zombies plushie and the camera mug!

New York for your first visit to the US? Nice! I just hope the dense city setting doesn’t overwhelm you and deter you from coming back when planning your future trip to the US! I don’t know how Liverpool is, but I’d expect it to be far less dense and urbanized than New York City. [I assume you’re visiting THE NYC as opposed to some random place in NY state.] Happy planning, packing, and enjoy your trip come Easter!

  9. Happy belated birthday! Hope you enjoyed your celebration :).

I would usually think people use “hauls” as the items are so cheap that it’s a steal? I once bought a $98 dress for $9.99, it’s almost a steal! I don’t know, not everyone has the same taste for words, I never bothered too much for wording *___*.

It’s awesome of your parents for getting you a mini sewing machine! Along with some Armani products! It’s cute that the “camera lens” is a thermal cup! Same with the Plant Vs Zombies plushies :)
