5 years on

9th May 2014

A lot can happen in five years. Sometimes it’s nice to look back and remember what has happened in the last 5 years. For me, I finished school, started and completed college, started university and started dating Tyrone, just to note a few key moments.

Why am I reminiscing about the last 5 years? Well, this week a cruise ship called the Thomson Spirit docked in Liverpool. Liverpool is a port city and for the first time in years the cruise terminal here is getting some use. It’s pretty exciting to see these beautiful ships docked literally at the end of my road.

The Thomson Spirit is special to me in that it was the first cruise ship I ever went on. 5 years ago my parents too me on a 7 day cruise around the Red Sea. I was 15 at the time. The whole holiday had such an impact on the way I thought about travel. Suddenly I wasn’t interested in sitting around a pool in a resort for a week. Instead, I wanted to explore the world and wake up in a new place everyday. Cruising became a huge love of mine.

Here is the Spirit docked in Liverpool, featuring myself looking pretty wind-swept. Pictures were taken on our phones so I apologise for the quality.

And here I am, on board the Spirit, 5 years ago. Look at the difference in the weather! Let’s be honest, I’ve not changed much.

See, I’ve always been obsessed with eating haha! I’m not sure if you can tell but I still had my braces on at the time and my nails were super short. I use to bite them.

I know that my website has been causing a few issues for some people. I’m trying to fix some of the problems relating to the coding as we speak. However, my host has been a pain in the arse and I’m getting quite frustrated. People are being blocked at random (sorry Cat!), adverts are popping up and some time when you click on a link it comes up with a full-page advert. I’m so sorry if you have had to experience any of these issues.

My plan is to change hosts. I have all summer to get it sorted. If anyone can recommend a free host (or very cheap host) that can host a blog of my size, and is reliable with a lot of support, please leave me a comment below. I am desperate to find a new host as soon as I can. I don’t even know how I’ve managed for two years with the current one.

Thank you in advance!

Enjoyed this post? Why not share it...

  1. Cat

A lot happened to you in the past 5 years! That’s awesome that you get to see ships docked so close by. I’ve never been a cruise before, but they’ve always looked fun πŸ™‚

Oh man, there was a blog that had a list of free hosting sites, and now I can’t remember which blog it was. I’ll let you know if I remember it! Good luck on finding a new host! I’m glad I’m still able to view your blog at work at least, haha.

    • I’d highly recommend a cruise to anyone. πŸ™‚ I’ve managed to login to my cpanel after having issues with that and it seems like no IP addresses have been blocked. I haven’t got a clue why it won’t let you see my site, but I will get it sorted. Hopefully the problem will be sorted when I move hosts.

  2. Hey Holly, I don’t know if you know this, but I am hosting a giveaway in which the prize is free hosting, so you should check that out!! You could win & get away from your host. πŸ™‚

Ahhh traveling, love it! I actually noticed that you had braces before you said you did. You’re right, you haven’t changed very much haha. Your hair is the same & your facial structure hasn’t changed too much, which is good because it means you’re not prone to aging as much as others! Cruises are such a great way to see the world in a cramped space of time too. Really quite fantastic. Hope you get to go on another again!

    • I’ve entered your competition and I’ve got my fingers crossed! The other prizes are awesome too by the way. πŸ™‚

Yeah, my hair style is pretty much the same, it’s just longer now. I’m glad to hear I’m not prone to ageing, haha! I want to look young forever. πŸ˜›

Currently I have my eye on a few cruises but I can’t really afford them right now. πŸ™

  3. Jea

You know, you actually look younger at 20 than you were before. Hihi. You’re really pretty. And I love cruising too. I haven’t done it much but my few experiences were awesome. πŸ™‚

Try iceglow.net for hosting! They’re hosting me right now and I’ve got no problems with them. They’re very active (well, at least the admin is.. I don’t know with the rest of the staff since I chat with only the admin) and reply real quick. 000WebHost is a horrible host. I’ve had some bad experiences with them.

Hope you’ll find the right host soon! Good luck and take care! πŸ™‚

    • Wow! That’s good to hear! I had shorter hair back when I was 15, and I think short hair aged me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m currently weighing up my options, looking at the pros and cons. πŸ™‚

  4. A lot can definitely happen in 5 years! In your case, that statement proves true :P. It looks like you had fun being on board the Thomson Spirit back then! Some people stay the same even after many years later and that’s fine ;-). You stay true to yourself, right? πŸ˜€

ofblue.org isn’t free but you can send in a query for a custom package :). If not, my buddy Alice has a list here: (broken link)

    Take care!

    • I agree. I like who I am and the way I look, so why change? Although sometimes I feel like I want to go for a dramatic hair colour change or something, just for fun!

Thanks for the suggestion. πŸ™‚ I will take a look. I’m really considering paying for hosting, even if it’s just a few pound a month. I’m just wary of where I am putting my money.

  5. It really is amazing how much can happen in 5 years! I can look back and while I’m the same, I’m also so different.

I love cruising too–where else have you cruised? I’ve been on one to Alaska and Mexico, though I’d love to do a European one or Caribbean. It’s so fun to visit so many different places in a short period of time!

Sorry about your host–that’s a real bummer. I’d direct you to my lovely host, but unfortunately, she’s not accepting any new hostees :S

    • I’ve only been on two cruises so far. I’ve cruised the Red Sea and the Western Mediterranean (Italy, Spain & France). A Caribbean cruise is high on my to do list!

That’s a shame, but thanks anyway. Hopefully I’ll find someone I can trust. πŸ™‚

  6. That five-year-old photo of you eating that little cake is so cute. XD I can’t remember if I’ve seen it before, but I know from reading your posts that you’ve been travelling a lot, especially on cruises, and five years passes super quick in the blogging world…

A lot can definitely happen in five years! Every time I do my yearly recap (which I have been doing for only the past three or so years), I am shocked at how much happens to me in a year. πŸ˜›

    • Haha thank you. πŸ™‚ I think I used that picture in a post many moons ago about how I loved travelling, which is probably why it seems familiar.

  7. […] but the final exam was tough and I really don’t think I did myself justice. And of course, seeing the Spirit on Wednesday was quite special, but I was in complete agony walking to the docks to see […]
